Hot weather and hot fishing. That just about sums up what went on for the 2009 Kokanee Power 2-Day New Melones Tournament. The action couldn?t have gotten any better for the 217 anglers and 85 teams who converged on this huge impoundment for two days of competition. Fish were found and caught at all the usual haunts such as Rose Island, South Island, the spillway, 49 Bridge, and the dam. Limits were the rule on both days with the average kokanee measuring in at just over 13.5 inches with a very good showing of 15 inch fish for the anglers placing in the tourney. A combined weight of three fish was needed for weigh-in each day and it was no problem for our anglers to fulfill that order. Over $15,000 in cash, prizes, and payouts were awarded to our 2009 participants braving the Gold County heat. Payouts were awarded down to the top 15 teams and prizes awarded down to 25th place. A big congratulations goes to the team of Mike Giovacchini and Travis Koll with their 2-day weight of 108.1 ounces taking 1st place and $1500 along with the team of Mike and Kendra Tripp taking 2nd place with a weight of 95.00 ounces and $1000. Top Junior Division congrats goes to Heather Staplin taking 1st place and Ryan Tripp for taking 2nd place. We can?t forget our Big Trout winners Robert & Chelsea Muhlbeier with their 4.07lb rainbow trout and Ed Keeler & Rudy Britschi with their 3.53lb rainbow trout.

Saturday, our anglers were treated to a Mexican cuisine luncheon provided by Al Del Real?s catering. Chile Verde and Spanish Rice ruled the kitchen that afternoon. Thanks to the Four Amigos for another good lunch. A special Thanks once again to Sonia and Lito Millan for donating Sunday lunch for our anglers. This year it was egg rolls, empanadas, polish dogs, and ambrosia that filled the stomachs of our hungry anglers.

On behalf of our participating anglers and volunteers, Kokanee Power wishes to thank Ric Brown and Kokanee Mart, Gary Miralles of Shasta Tackle, Larry Abernathy and Howard Bowles of Davey Tree Service, Bob Loggins and Rand Smith of Pacific Gas & Electric, and Dan & Melanie Lewis of Glory Hole Sports for their always generous donations to this year?s event. As always, much appreciation to the town of Angels Camp and the Angels Camp Business Association for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Until next year.
