Once again the Pine Flat Derby kicks off the Kokanee Power derby season for 2009. It was definitely Spring with a chilly morning transforming to a breezy sunny day looming around the low seventies. It was a great day to be fishin! Thirty-eight teams consisting of 93 anglers converged on this Central California Kings Canyon impoundment in search of the 3-fish derby limit that will put them in first place. In the days before, fishing had been spotty with near limits at best being reported by local anglers braving the winds which had plagued the region. Regardless of the spotty results, the more die hard and dedicated anglers still showed up to the derby with optimism and anticipation of a change in the action. With hopes of giving the action a boost, the San Joaquin Hatchery planted an additional 3000lbs of rainbow trout days before the derby. Twenty percent of this plant consisted of Kings River Trophy Rainbows. This is a testament to Kokanee Power?s long standing relationship with the San Joaquin Hatchery and their dedication to California?s Inland Fisheries. And it was these very same fish which put several of our anglers in the top fifteen winning places taking advantage of the fresh plant. Top locations for lucky anglers included Deer Creek, Windy Gap, and the power lines. Rainbows weighed in averaged just over a pound with proud six, five, and four pound 3-fish derby limits taking the top five winning spots. Long time Kokanee Power Members Rosey and Roger Kier take top team honors weighing in a 6.73lb derby limit and new Junior Angler Miranda Beck takes top Junior Division honors with her 1.68lb rainbow.

Special Thanks to Perry Coy for providing us another great BBQ luncheon. Definitely hits the spot after fishing all morning. Many thanks to members Gerald Schoonhoven and Kent McVey for their dedicated assistance with the weigh-in and especially Barbara & Jake Flohr for being thrown straight into the fire and running their first ever derby like veterans. Kudos to both of you! And many, many, many thanks to all who participated at this year?s Pine Flat Derby and helping make this another successful KP event!!

See you all at Shasta Lake next month!
