And so another fun and successful Stampede Kokanee Derby goes into the record books. One hundred thirty-two avid anglers comprising sixty teams gathered on this 2nd day of August with the hopes of being one of the fifteen winning teams.

Seeing the floating city of lights off in the distance from the launch ramp just minutes prior to the 5:30am start was evidence of a good quick and smooth derby start. A few ticks later it was derby time and down went the lead, wire, and myriad of lures and tackle.

The morning gave our anglers moderate action with many boats finding cooperative fish just outside the launch ramp and off the big island. Our anglers couldn?t have asked for a better morning with a light breeze, sunshine, and no smoke. A steadier bite would have made the morning perfect.

As the morning progressed, the bite got tougher for most with a few teams staying on the bite aggressively switching lures and setups. 2008 turns out to be the year of the Mack with many teams calling out catches of Mackinaw to six pounds. Small to mid sized Kwikfish and Apex lures along with swimbaits proved to be the ticket for catching Macks that day.

Late morning, the old faithful wind picked up which gave our teams a challenge to maneuver and fish successfully. Although catches remained sporadic around the lake, the wind increased as the derby progressed. Soon enough, the 2 o?clock weigh in arrived and it was time to hit the weigh-in line. This year?s fish averaged 13 ? to 14 inches with a really good showing of fish 15 inches to just under 16 inches and weighing in at just over a pound. This year, it took 44 ounces (3 fish weight 4 oz under 3lbs) to qualify for the Top 15 winners line up. Fifty-one ounces proved to be the top weight which wins this years derby.

Once again, Perry Coy?s BBQ treated our anglers to a fantastic lunch featuring smoked tri tip, smoked pork, and all the fixins. Our anglers also participated in an awesome raffle sponsored by Cabelas, Mountain Hardware, North River Boats, Davey Tree, and American Truck & Trailer Body Company.

Sincerest Thanks to all our sponsors for supporting this year?s Stampede event.

And so concludes this year?s Stampede Kokanee Team Derby. Many thanks to the anglers who participated. Without your support, Kokanee Power would not be the success it is today.

Respectfully,

Al Millan
Vice President, Kokanee Power
