No Pro Division at this Derby.

It was 6am on this chilly Spring morning as the 44 teams raced off from either Deer Creek, Island Park, or Lake View Launches toward their prospective fishing spots. A cold winter like breeze greeted the teams. The event was the 3rd Annual Kokanee Power Pine Flat Lake Trout & Salmon Derby. The object of the game, the four heaviest trout or king salmon for each team.
The bite was like the early morning breeze - cold. Anglers found slow action for both trout and salmon. Fortunately, midmorning gave our anglers fair to good action especially for the beautiful trout which lurk this Central Sierra Impoundment. King salmon averaging 2 to 2 1/2 pounds were found by a handful of lucky anglers rolling shad and trolling shad imitation spoons at depths from 60 to 110 feet. Winning salmon averaged just over 3lbs. For most anglers, it was trout fishing that kept them in the game. Feisty rainbow trout averaging just over a pound were caught by most with a good showing of trout over 2lbs. The trout were found from just under the surface down to 60 feet. It was anyone's ballgame as the trout took any kind of shad imitating lures.
As the breeze disapeared and the sun began to bake those still on the water, it was time to weigh in.
As the scores were tallied and fish weighed, our anglers were treated to another fine BBQ luncheon prepared by Perry Coy's BBQ Catering. With stomachs full and raffle prizes won, it was time to announce our winners.
Congratulations to all the winning teams and Junior Anglers. Thanks to all who participated at this successful season opening derby and special thanks to the Piedra American Legion for hosting our event and to Doyal's General Store for hosting our registration site.
See you all at Shasta Lake !
