O'dell Lake Derby Report

Postby capron6 » Mon Aug 24, 2009 11:37 am

The Derby at O'dell Lake came off very well. The weather on Friday was nice and sunny but windy most of the day. On Saturday however the winds were milder and the day turned nice and warm after the usual morning nip in the air. For those that have never visited Shelter Cove Resort, you have a treat in store for you. A beautiful location on the West end of the lake, numerous campsites, several cabins, and a lodge with individual rooms, store with some great fishing gear as well as the basic groceries. The grounds are well kept and several of the cabins are lakefront and reasonably priced. Jim Kielblock, the owner, and his staff do a fantastic job and are very friendly. The lake sits just East of Willamette Pass, thus affording some great scenery. In the winter there is snowmobiling and a ski lodge nearby. As for the fishing, it generally is very good due to a healthy population of kokanee. In addition, there are mackinaw and rainbows available.

The owners and staff provided all entrants with barbeque oysters and a keg of beer on Friday night. Super job. Derby day, Daly's Window Service provided lunch consisting of your choice of burgers, hot dogs, beef brisket, and leg of lamb, accompanied by a choice of salads, and beans. Thanks to these folks for their generosity.

OK, for all that may be interested, here are the results of the O'Dell Lake Kokanee Derby. Total of 112 entrants. Junior Division had 13 anglers, all of whom were winners and went home for a nice prize for their participation. An additional five places were paid out for a total of 15 places instead of 10. First place money was provided by Kokanee Power $400, Shelter Cove Resort $400, and Daly's Window Service $200. Here are the winners with their weight for five fish and their winnings. Congratulations to them. Kokanee Power hopes that everyone had an enjoyable day and thank you for your participation.

Hello Kok Power of Oregon. I was up in your area over the weekend doing some boat shopping. Heard about the tournament and just missed seeing your president's new Boulton at the Boulton factory. Did spend some time relaxing on Emigrant Lake and took a boat test drive on a lake 30 minutes east of Central Pointe. Like your lakes - sure are clean, not a lot of crowds, weather was nice, and the launches looked free to me. Just needed my poles and gear and little corn.

Could someone who was there give the rest of us who could not make it a report on the fishing conditions. Was it a good bite, what were the individual sizes?
